Creating challenging, socially engaged and inspiring performances with culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged young people.

Western Edge Youth Arts creates challenging, socially engaged and inspiring performances with culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged young people. Their most experienced team of emerging artists, the Edge Ensemble, is creating their most ambitious performance work to date: Caliban, responding to the impact of climate change within diverse communities.

2016 Pitch
Funds raised: $20,600

WEYA fundraised $20,600 in Melbourne to contribute to artist fees and production costs for their most ambitious performance work to date. The funding support meant full creative control and the opportunity to learn and work in a professional setting alongside professional artists.

The impact...

Thanks to your support, Jane* is just one of six ensemble members that has benefitted from participating in the funded project, 'Caliban'. The experience has enabled Jane to apply the creative skills she had acquired from earlier programs in a more sophisticated process of theatre making to create an original production for main stage theatre. Jane contributed to all aspects of the production process including devising, writing and performing in this collaborative project.

This is a huge achievement for Jane, and she couldn’t have done it without your support. She has since gone on to become a more established theatre maker with the company.

In 2018 Jane was given a position as lead artist facilitating a drama workshop program in Werribee with culturally diverse teenagers, who under her guidance are now creating theatre that reflects their own lives, experiences and concerns for presentation to their peers within their communities.

Thanks to your donations, Western Edge Youth Arts have been able to finance the production of this original production that is enabling diverse young people to make sense of the world they live in through art.The flow on effect has enabled them to leverage the success of the play to attract further funding for future productions. Your donation hasn’t just supported their latest production – it has given a voice to the young multicultural community of west Melbourne.
