Making Tracks Far West NSW
Of the young people Making Tracks support, 70 per cent are experiencing homelessness, 95 per cent have at least one identifiable health issue, and the majority have been in contact with the legal system. The organisation takes a holistic approach to improving engagement, functional life skills and education for young people through a specialised program.
2020 Pitch
Funds raised: $66,000
Pitching at TFN Live Sydney, Making Tracks CEO Julie spoke about her town of Broken Hill and the young people who live there. She also shed light on the limited access to opportunities and obstacles faced by young people with backgrounds of disadvantage. Her proposed solution? An employment program that provides young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence to gain meaningful work, and ultimately break cycles of unemployment.
The Impact
With the funds raised at TFN, Making Tracks was able to purchase all of the resources necessary to set up a work crew, providing the opportunity to over 50 young people in Broken Hill to build the skills, knowledge and confidence to gain meaningful work. Purchases included two 8-seater vans, work gear, PPE, tools and equipment. While the original plan had been to purchase one 12-seater van, COVID-19 restrictions prompted Making Tracks to change it plans, ultimately making it easier for youth to work at different locations, reducing wait time and increasing the number of trips possible.
