Creating Chances

Creating Chances supports at-risk young people aged eight to 18 years to reach their full potential through a combination of sport and peer mentoring.

Delivered by qualified coaches, mentors and young facilitators, Creating Chances’ unique program uses sports to explore personal development, community building, social change and post-school pathways.

2020 Pitch
Funds raised: $58,800

Sport is enjoyable and beneficial to all, regardless of gender, religion or even language. This is what makes it one of the most powerful vehicles for inclusion and creating community. Creating Chances believes - as Nelson Mandela did - that sport has the power to change the world. At TFN Live Sydney, Assmaah pitched for funding to expand its sports and peer mentoring program into four high schools in South West Sydney.

The Impact

Approximately 200 young people and 18 youth facilitators were directly impacted by the program, with students reporting statistically significant improvements across four key areas: resilience, hope, self-efficacy and optimism. While COVID-19 temporarily disrupted their in-school programs, Creating Chances successfully adapted their leadership and personal development program to be delivered online and face to face programs have resumed at two high schools, Holroyd IEC/HS and Fairfield. In addition, a special sporting event brought together 80 diverse young people and a quarterly youth forum is connecting youth leaders to develop and review COVID-safe engagement activities.
