Work reStart
workRestart operates to provide second chances to incarcerated people, establishing social enterprises that can provide employment opportunities on release.
2020 Pitch
Funds Raised: $34,400
In Australia we spend $4.1 billion on incarceration a year, but 46% of people released will reoffend in 2 years. workRestart addresses this complex issue. Helen pitched at TFN Virtual Live for a project based on second chances and turning lives around. Project reStitch involves setting up an Industrial Sewing training area inside Borallon Training and Correctional Centre. This program will enable prisoners to learn in-demand skills to help get them a job on release, building confidence through teamwork, contribution, responsibility and leadership.
The Impact…
Work reStart has been busy growing their reStitch Program, supporting 112 incarcerated people in the last year. This was made possible by the funding they received, enabling Work reStart to purchase industrial sewing equipment so they could train and provide a real-world work environment to incarcerated people. The reStitch program increases the chances of those they support to achieve job opportunities on release, greatly impacting their future. The impact of the program is clear from this story of Tex’s experience, “After 6 months of working with us, Tex is now a group leader and is working with our second chance partners program to have a job in the field already organised on his release.”
