New Stars Association
Many new young immigrants face major cultural, economic and social barriers and struggle to participate successfully in school resulting in significant knock-on effects. Without strong role models and traditional structures they are easily diverted into risk- taking and antisocial behaviour. Victoria has seen a significant rise in the reception of young African males into prison over the last three years and tensions between police and this group are of concern. Basketball training and competition are the main focus, however this is contingent upon engagement in all aspects of the New Stars program, including weekly homework and tutorial sessions, submission of academic progress reports, health and well-being, cultural awareness and community engagement. The program is based on maintaining strong commitment to school, raising self-esteem and independence, reducing cultural barriers, taking responsibility and giving back to the community.
